The idea is to level up your knowledge fast, so you’re empowered with all the info and tools you need to connect the dots and move your music forward.
To do that, you need a plan that's real and flexible. Why? Because by doing it and writing it down, it will change your mindset and get you focused on what you need to do. And when you are overwhelmed and have lost your focus, you can refer back to your plan and get focused and clear again.
This is going to save you a ton of wasted time. And time is the most valuable resource you have.
See the management of your music as a business... and act accordingly. It’s a lot like any new technology startup. There's something unique being created, it’s un-tested and you're looking to lead rather than follow. There's a lot to be learned in managing music from the world of startups... fundamental lessons in starting a business that are essential to the evolution of your music and the growth of your audience.
Centralized is a startup. It's a full on journey. It's the same for us as it is for you. Easy to get overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done... but being new makes it easier to pivot and switch quickly... to take that hard left turn at just the right moment when an opportunity presents itself. We're all working with the limited resources we have and making the most of them.
Before we take this first critically important lesson from startups and apply it to the management of music, let's remember that it's the music that really drives the mission. It must be prioritised, respected and honoured. Your startup will be led by your music and not the other way around. Read that again.
To develop your plan and strategy, start by thinking in time periods:
- Short term - in the next few months.
- Medium term - in the next year.
- Long term - a dream so big that you secretly wonder if its possible!
And then across those time periods.... What are your goals? What do you want to achieve? Keep it real by expressing it in simple terms that are measurable:
- How many rehearsals, shows, new songs, releases and anything else will you do in each time period?
- How will you achieve them? With the people, time & money you have around you and what you hope to attract.
Your plan is not "set and forget". Change your plan whenever you feel its needed. Keep evolving it. That's what it's there for... a living document.
